Letter of Consent

Hello. My name is Sara Torina, and I am a student in the English Studies Master’s program at Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, Illinois.  I am doing research about the rhetoric of scrapbooking within the scrapbooking community, and I would like you to take my survey and/or interview you. You were selected as a possible participant because of your participation in the scrapbooking community.  I ask that you read this form and ask any questions you may have before agreeing to participate in the study. 

The survey should take between 15-20 minutes to complete, depending on the depth of your questions.  You will be given the option to during the survey to sign up to be interviewed via email (this is completely optional).  The interview will take between half an hour to an hour of your time, depending on the depth of your responses.  I would like to acquire this part of the research solely via e-mail.  I will e-mail you a document in which you can type your questions and send them back to me.  Although this study may not directly benefit you, it potentially will benefit our understanding of individual archiving practices. I do not anticipate any foreseeable risks or discomfort other than the inconvenience to you in completing the questionnaire.  I will also be happy to send you copies of my finished paper electronically at your request.

I plan to use the interview information in writing my Master’s thesis at Elmhurst.  I will keep your identity confidential and use a pseudonym when referring to you.  I will keep your records private to the extent allowed by law, and your name and other facts that might point to you will not appear when I present this study or publish the results.

Your participation is voluntary and no compensation will be offered.  Please note that you must be at least 18 years of age in order to participate in this study.  Please share only what you are comfortable with sharing. You may decline to participate, or you may choose not to answer any particular question that I ask. If you change your mind about participating, you may stop the interview at any time.
